Sea Turtles

Before I start on today, a couple of corrections. The night we flew in to Maui, we didn't go around Haleakala, but around Puu Kukui, which is only around 5700ft. Still haven't been up Haleakala, but it's on the list for the next couple of days. Also, today was sea kayaking and snorkelling at Makena Bay, a bit south of Kihei, in the same bay where we went to Molokini yesterday.

It was another early start, on the water by 7:30 for about 3 hours of sea kayaking and snorkelling. We did get Evelyn out for the kayaking, but not for the snorkelling. In the end, we wished we'd had a bit more kayaking, and a bit less snorkelling, but we saw way more wildlife than yesterday. While we saw some sea turtles from the boat yesterday, we saw numerous below us and just feet away on the surface today! They are really incredible animals, and so far this has been the highlight of the trip. I'm now really kicking myself for not getting a waterproof camera :-) The best was the turtle rubbing his belly on our boat anchor. Here are a couple of pictures from the kayaking, the first taken precariously with the non waterproof camera out of the dry bag.
On the way home I was able to get a few shots of Puu Kukui from the car. You can really see that we are on the leeward side of the island, and this isn't even summer!
The lowlight of the day and trip so far is the mild heat exhaustion that hit me today. Too much fun and not enoug sleep or fluids, but we'll fix that tomorrow.
