Last Day & Homeward Bound

Today was our last morning on Maui, mainly just packing up, closing the condo, and heading back to Kahului Airport to fly to Honolulu. We did make one small excursion on the hunt for a coffee supplier. We didn't have any luck, but did stop for coffee in Paia, a small town east of the airport which is apparently a self created destination with nothing to see. But, the coffee was good, and there's really nothing to see there.

One last photo of the Maui coastline, taken through the window with my cell phone, so please excuse the lack of quality.

Arriving back in Honolulu, we headed over to Pearl Harbour. Getting there was easy, but the logistics at the site were a bit more than I expected (I should have known given the significance). We arrived about 2pm, but to see the Missouri you have to shuttle over to the island. Given the time, we decided that touring the USS Bowfin would be the best option. This is a WWII era attack submarine, and the audio tour was quite good. You get to walk through the entire boat from forward to rear torpedo rooms, with all the rooms open or with glass fronted doors. The only thing you don't see on the boat is the conning tower, but they do have one to see on land.

Sitting outside after enjoying a drink we were treated with a few flybys of the Navy's Blue Angels display team, in Honolulu for a weekend show!

Steve, Daphne, and Evelyn were staying one night in Honolulu, so dropped us back at the airport at about 5pm before heading in to their hotel. We figured this was great, enough time to check in and have some dinner before our 8:15pm flight. However, we had lots of time. The inbound flight had engine trouble and had to return to Vancouver for a replacement, so we didn't get off the ground until 2:30am. This was a bit more time than we needed to explore the airport and have dinner, but we did discover they have quite a nice outdoor garden and ponds inside security. And we enjoyed a nice meal at the Kona Brewing Company, compliments of Air Canada.

As usual, Air Canada did a great job on getting us home with no issue. They had already booked us seats on a flight through Calgary, as the later Ottawa flight was overbooked. Turned out to be a bit of a blessing as we were upgraded to preferred economy seats, which are way more comfortable with the extra legroom. We landed at midnight, tired, but still wide awake on Honolulu time.
