Molokini

An early start today to be on a boat in Maalaea by 7am. An hour ride with a hilarious captain and we were circling the crescent shaped top of a volcanic vent called Molokini.

Used heavily for target practice from the 40s until the 90s it is a bit beaten up. We were on a catamaran called the Four Winds, and we were fortunate that it was only at half capacity with about 80 on board. We moored inside the crescent for a couple of hours of snorkelling, along with a bbq lunch. The water is warm, and crystal clear. Not sure how deep it was, but no problem picking out tiny fish on the bottom, probably 30-40 feet deep. Not a huge number of fish, but a good variety, and we were always surrounded by Black Triggerfish. Didn't have a waterproof camera, so this was the best I could get from the upper deck.

On the way back into harbour we paused for a while to see about a half dozen sea turtles. The rest of the day we relaxed at the condo and went for dinner in Kaanapali, a resort town 15 minutes up the coast. Plan for tomorrow is kayaking and possibly snorkelling in Kihei. Good thing is we don't need to worry about the weather, sunny with humid highs of 31C every day, but a nice breeze off the water.
